DB Cargo UK has recently made the switch to running all trains to and from Drax Power Station on hydro-treated vegetable oil. This change is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%, saving over 12,000 tonnes of carbon annually.

Currently, DB Cargo UK transports approximately 4.5 million tonnes of biomass pellets to Drax Power Station each year, operating about 60 trains per week. The decision to use HVO in trains is a positive step towards meeting the government’s target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

According to DB Cargo UK’s Chief Sales Officer Roger Neary, this collaboration with Drax is beneficial for both companies. He emphasized that until the UK rail network is fully electrified, HVO remains the most viable solution for reducing carbon emissions in rail freight.

HVO is considered a highly sustainable and eco-friendly fuel, derived from waste products without the use of virgin materials. The implementation of HVO in trains not only helps in meeting sustainability targets but also minimizes environmental impact.

Considered one of the world’s purest fuels, HVO significantly reduces harmful emissions and plays a crucial role in decarbonizing diesel vehicles and machinery. Policies and incentives are needed to facilitate more customers switching to HVO for their transportation needs.
