Kemi Badenoch Wins Tory Leadership Vote: A Vision for Small Businesses

Former Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Kemi Badenoch, has successfully secured the Tory leadership vote, positioning herself as the definitive choice over former Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government, Robert Jenrick. As of October 31, Badenoch emerged as the favorite, and her new role offers an opportunity to champion small businesses across the UK.

Small Business reached out to Kemi Badenoch to discuss her priorities for small firms.

Addressing Business Rates: A Call for Reform

Badenoch: “The current business rates system is a complex web of reliefs and exemptions that often feels arbitrary. I fully support reforms aimed at simplifying this system, ensuring it is fairer for everyone involved.”

Taxation and Small Business Growth

Badenoch: “Tax rates in this country are excessively high, stifling aspiration and entrepreneurship. This issue contributes to our challenges with low productivity growth and economic inactivity.” Badenoch emphasizes the need for a fundamental reassessment of the role of government in economic life: “We must cut taxes and rebalance the state’s responsibilities, ensuring it excels in its core functions while freeing up our entrepreneurial spirit to drive growth and improve living standards.”

She notes the previous Conservative government’s efforts to raise the VAT threshold, benefitting many SMEs, and expresses her desire for a comprehensive review of the VAT system to simplify it and lower rates for consumers and businesses alike.

Enhancing Government Support for SMEs

Badenoch: “The most effective support governments can provide for small businesses is the elimination of roadblocks like high taxes, heavy regulations, and difficulties with access to skilled labor.” She recalls her leadership in the Smarter Regulation Programme, which successfully alleviated burdensome record-keeping protocols for employers, saving billions.

Moreover, Badenoch criticizes the Labour government’s Employment Rights Bill, predicting it will impose significant costs on small firms. “As Conservative Party Leader, I will be a staunch advocate for small businesses and will hold Labour accountable for policies detrimental to their growth.”

Unlocking Global Opportunities for SMEs

Badenoch: “While challenges persist, many UK small businesses are thriving in international markets, with 130,000 exporting to the US alone.” She proudly highlights her achievement in spearheading the UK’s accession to the CPTPP, an expansive free trade area designed to facilitate SME engagement. This agreement empowers small businesses to benefit from enhanced provisions on services and e-commerce.

Looking ahead, she emphasizes her commitment to supporting initiatives that simplify trade processes, making importing and exporting more accessible for small businesses.

Supporting Sole Traders and Freelancers

Badenoch: “Sole traders and freelancers are crucial to our economy. Their flexibility allows for innovative business solutions and should be valued accordingly.” She plans to challenge Labour’s proposed reforms to ensure they do not inadvertently harm small businesses or freelancers.

Harnessing the Potential of Artificial Intelligence

Badenoch: “The integration of AI and digital tools is essential for productivity growth in both public and private sectors. The government must foster a competitive environment that enables small businesses to embrace innovation without overwhelming regulations.” She contrasts her conservative approach with Labour’s calls for tighter regulations, arguing that excessive rules stifle technological advancement and inhibit growth.

Celebrating Local Small Businesses

Badenoch: “I have a deep appreciation for the small businesses in North West Essex, from independent shops to life science companies. I encourage everyone to support local businesses by choosing independent shops for holiday gifts this season!”
