ABB is investing over £27m in a new facility in Nottingham to meet the growing demand for Furse® earthing and lightning protection solutions. The new site, set to open in early 2025, will incorporate advanced technology, flexible automation, R&D, and digital processes to increase production capacity and improve efficiency and sustainability.
Furthermore, more than 100 employees will relocate to the new 9,500 sq m facility from the current 6,300 sq m ABB Installation Products Nottingham foundry. This foundry has been operational for over a century in the area where Furse was founded back in 1893.
In addition to the expanded facility, construction will adhere to the BREEAM Excellent rating for sustainable building standards. It will feature efficient equipment and technology, photovoltaic rooftop cells, electric vehicle charging stations, and processes focused on reducing waste and energy consumption.
The space is designed to foster collaboration and training, accelerate R&D, and drive automation to better serve European customers and enhance global inventory availability.
Khalid Mandri, president of ABB Installation Products Division, stated, “This significant investment continues our legacy of Furse technology, enabling us to lead in earthing and lightning protection and provide solutions that enhance safety and reliability for our customers. As we expand our capabilities and capacity globally, we strengthen ABB’s manufacturing footprint and regionalize production of high-demand electrical solutions for customers, installers, and distribution partners.“
ABB Installation Products currently operates in six European locations and employs over 100 associates in Nottingham who work on Furse solutions. The new campus, located in Fairham Business Park, will occupy nearly five acres and be easily accessible for employees, customers, suppliers, and distribution partners.
“Our new facility represents a major advancement in design and technology, positioning us for the future while helping us conserve resources and reduce energy and water consumption in line with ABB’s sustainability priorities,” stated Andrea Castella, Europe region leader of ABB Installation Products.
