The University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonnington Campus has recently completed the construction of the small animal clinical teaching building, known as the Sir Peter Rubish Centre for Veterinary Education. Designed by Nottingham-based architecture practice CPMG, this £3 million project has enabled the university to double its capacity for related courses.
Transitioning to support the university’s goal of addressing the skills gap in the veterinary industry, the state-of-the-art facility includes a full practice area, teaching spaces, and areas for both small animals and larger livestock. Noteworthy design features such as glulam framing support the university’s net zero carbon strategy, minimizing embodied carbon through the use of engineered wood beams.
Emphasizing hygiene throughout the facility due to its intended use for animal and veterinary care activities, the project team, led by CPMG, has successfully executed the project. Achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ and surpassing RIBA’s targets for embodied and operational carbon, the facility has been shortlisted in the public sector category for the RICS Awards.
Expressing his satisfaction with the project’s completion, Professor Gary England, Foundation Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, remarked, “We are delighted that the Sir Peter Rubish Centre for Veterinary Medicine is complete, enabling us to provide cutting-edge facilities to our growing student population.” Collaborating with main contractor RG Carter, Arup, and Ares Landscape Architects, CPMG continues to showcase expertise in both the private and education sectors.
