Derbion, the thriving shopping and leisure destination, is set to embark on a transformative project to create a new gateway to Derby city center this month. The final funding arrangements for the project have been approved by Derby City Council, paving the way for work to commence.
The Eastern Gateway project, a collaboration between Derbion and the Government’s Future High Streets Fund, will see the creation of a new façade and urban garden opposite the bus station and the eastern entrance to Derbion. Work is scheduled to start this month and is expected to be completed by the first half of 2025.
Beth McDonald, Managing Director at Derbion, expressed excitement about the project, stating that it will establish a welcoming new entrance to the city center, attracting more foot traffic and visitors by opening up the space and introducing an urban square. She looks forward to the development process and the positive impact it will have on the city.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy, and Policy at Derby City Council, shared her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its significance in the revitalization of Derby’s city center. By transforming the area, they aim to enhance the city’s aesthetics and create a space that everyone can enjoy, ultimately improving connectivity and accessibility within the city center.
The Government’s Future High Streets Fund awarded Derby City Council £15 million to support the city center’s development, with £3 million allocated to the Eastern Gateway – Derbion scheme, supplemented by Derbion’s additional contribution of £1 million. This project signifies the council’s commitment to ensuring a bright, inclusive, and opportunity-filled future for Derby.
