The brand new planetarium at Sherwood Observatory is on track to be completed by the end of November. Transitioning from the dome, the planetarium will soon transport visitors out of this world. Now, work is set to begin on the internal areas, with a specialist planetarium contractor coming in to fit it out with screens and projectors. Featuring 59 seats and disabled access, the planetarium will also include a 10-meter diameter screen showing tours of the solar system and beyond. The project team will also focus on preparing the groundwork outside the planetarium to welcome visitors.
In a statement, Councillor Matthew Relf, Executive Lead Member for Regeneration, Growth, and Local Planning at Ashfield District Council, expressed excitement about the nearing completion of the construction: “It is wonderful to see the new Planetarium and Science Discovery Centre coming together. It will be a fantastic place for schools, youth groups, individuals, and families to enjoy shows about space and science, sparking a passion for future scientists and engineers in the area.”
The planetarium construction is a part of Sherwood Observatory and Ashfield District Council’s development to establish a Science Discovery Centre and planetarium at the Observatory in Sutton. The plans for the site aim to create a unique, world-class facility that will rival others in the UK. Steve Wallace, Planetarium Project Manager, elaborated on the project: “This cutting-edge facility promises theatrical shows and tours of the solar system, offering visitors a journey through the Milky Way and Universe.”
