Rail operator Greater Anglia has partnered with Spencer Rail to develop a state-of-the-art wheel lathe facility at its Clacton premises in Essex. This £10m project aims to enhance train services and create new job opportunities. Spencer Group will lead the design and construction of the facility to cater to Greater Anglia’s fleet, ranging from three-car trains to 12-car units. The completion of this project is expected by May 2025.
Specialist rail and civils teams have already conducted enabling works on site and are now gearing up for the construction phase. Spencer Group will not only build the new facility but also make modifications to track, depot protection, signalling, and overhead line equipment. Additionally, a new welfare facility for maintenance staff, utilities, a drivers’ walkway, and lighting facilities will be delivered to support daily operations.
Tony Wells, Pre-construction Project Director, emphasized the company’s expertise in delivering high-quality results within complex environments. He mentioned the collaborative efforts with Greater Anglia and third-party stakeholders to ensure minimal disruption to existing operations.
Andrew Goodrum, Greater Anglia Client & Programme Director, highlighted the positive impact of this £17m investment on service performance and job creation in the region. He expects faster train servicing post-completion, leading to improved passenger service.
