A University of Lincoln research study, supported by British Steel and Lapwing Energy, has been shortlisted in the Research with Impact category at the upcoming Green Gown Awards. The research aims to determine if man-made charcoal or ‘biochar’ could serve as a viable coal replacement. British Steel is actively involved in steering the study and providing necessary technical insights to assess the feasibility of biochar replacing injection coal in electric arc furnace steel production as a clean carbon source for the future.
Head of Research and Development, Andy Trowsdale, emphasized the importance of carbon in steelmaking processes and the potential of this work to establish a circular supply chain for clean carbon sources with significant CO₂ benefits in steelmaking and beyond. Led by Amir Badiee, Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Energy, the project has been recognized for its quality and sustainability credentials, previously being shortlisted at the Green Gown awards.
The competition has selected 133 finalists from 84 institutions, with winners set to be announced at an awards ceremony on November 13th at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh, after a final judging process in October. Now in their twentieth year, the awards celebrate exceptional sustainability initiatives undertaken by universities and colleges in the UK and Ireland.
