The UK Defence Secretary, John Healey, recently visited Sheffield Forgemasters to emphasize Britain’s dedication to the AUKUS submarine delivery partnership as a key catalyst for job creation and economic growth in Yorkshire and throughout the UK. During the visit, Mr. Healey highlighted Sheffield Forgemasters as a prime example of UK industry excellence that not only enhances global security but also provides employment opportunities for skilled local workers. This partnership with our Australian and American counterparts is instrumental in driving economic prosperity across Britain.
Accompanied by prominent figures such as Sheffield Forgemasters’ CEO, Gary Nutter, the visit included a tour of the Heavy Forge to witness the production of intricate forged components for the AUKUS Class submarines. Gary Nutter expressed gratitude for the prestigious visit and emphasized the long-term benefits of the AUKUS pact in creating secure, highly skilled jobs not only for Sheffield Forgemasters and Yorkshire but also for the broader UK supply chain.
The AUKUS submarine programmes, jointly undertaken by Britain and Australia, are estimated to generate around 7,000 additional jobs in the UK and involve over 21,000 individuals in the UK supply chain at the peak of operations. Sheffield Forgemasters is actively investing in its defence manufacturing capabilities, with plans for a new Heavy Forging line and a cutting-edge machine shop to support AUKUS production requirements.
During the visit, which was also attended by the Australian High Commissioner and Deputy Prime Minister, Richard Marles, Minister Healey witnessed firsthand how Sheffield Forgemasters is reaping the benefits of the trilateral AUKUS defence and security partnership between the UK, US, and Australia. Hosted by Sir Tim Fraser, along with Gary Nutter and Amy Grey, the visit showcased the unique expertise and capabilities of Sheffield Forgemasters, positioning the company as a valuable partner in delivering SSN-AUKUS submarines for the UK and Australia.
